Background

Bee Hotel is a sustainable and self-contained honeycomb package made of repurposed wood to help provide solitary bees with a safe nesting site. It provides gardeners with the opportunity to help our world’s best pollinators as they face population declines due to habitat loss, disease, and pesticide poisoning.

Research

Bee hotels cater towards solitary bees. About one-third of solitary bees are cavity nesters which make cells for their offspring in the hollow stems of plants and wood. These bees leave nectar and pollen "bee bread" gathered from flowers for their offspring as their main food source. This led me to design the dual purpose Bee Hotel which has two compartments: one compartment containing bamboo stems for nesting, and the second compartment can be transformed into a small planter for flowers.
